28 years’ old Romanian Simona Halep, 2nd in the WTA ranking, will be the star of the 31st Palermo Ladies Open, to be played from August 1 to 9 at Palermo’s Country Time Club. Her participation was announced this morning by Giorgio Cammarata, the Club’s president, and Oliviero Palma, the tournament’s director, in a press conference. “We are enthusiast about having one of the best players ever to resume her path in professional tennis here in Palermo – said Cammarata and Palma. Simona has immediately showed a great interest in the tournament and, 10 years after her first appearance, she will be back playing at the Country Club”. 20 WTA titles winner (among them, Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019), Simona Halep achieved, on the 22nd of February, the milestone of 500 career victories. She has been number one in the rankings for 64 weeks: from October 9 2017 to January 28 2018, and form February 26 2018 to January 27 2019. The deadline for sign-ins to the 31st Palermo Ladies Open, the first tournament in the world following the COVID-19 suspension, has been set to next Monday, July 13. The WTA decided to concede one more week for players to decide whether they’ll take part in the tournament organised by Palermo’s Country Time Club. In sum, both Main Draw and Qualifiers sign-ins will close on the 13th of July. The 31st Palermo Ladies Open, having a prize money of $225,500, will begin on August 1 with the qualification round, while the matches from the Main Draw will start on Monday, August 3, culminating with the final on the 9th of August. The Main Draw will consist of 32 players (4 coming from the Qualifiers and 4 with a Wild Card), whereas the Doubles tournament will have 16 participating couples (2 WC).

That’s what Oliviero Palma, the tournament’s CEO, said to comment the Rumanian tennis player’s declarations to the international press. Halep, ranked world’s number 2 and winner, among others, of the 2018 Roland Garros and the 2019 Wimbledon, has confirmed her willingness to take part in the WTA International tournament at the Country Club. “We’ve been in contact with Halep’s manager for some time – Palma said – and we’ve been talking for days about her potential participation in Palermo. The Main Draw for the 31st Palermo Ladies Open will be unveiled tomorrow. One who will come back to the Country is Jill Teichmann. The Swiss won last year’s edition by beating the favourite Kiki Bertens in a two-set match.

La manifestazione, in programma dall’1 al 9 agosto prossimi, potrà contare sulla presenza degli appassionati, sia pure in numero limitato e nel rispetto delle norme di distanziamento. “La circolare emanata dal Dipartimento della Protezione Civile Regionale (n. 22 del 19 giugno 2020, ndr) – ha spiegato il Direttore del torneo, Oliviero Palma – chiarisce che nelle manifestazioni internazionali, nazionali e regionali, amatoriali e agonistiche, all’interno dei circoli sportivi è ammessa la presenza del pubblico, fermo restando il divieto di assembramento e delle norme sul distanziamento sociale. Riteniamo che possano essere, quindi, presenti sugli spalti circa 500 spettatori, divisi tra le due tribune. I fans, all’ingresso, dovranno sottoporsi al termoscanner, essere in possesso del biglietto o abbonamento nominativo e dovranno prendere posto nella poltroncina loro assegnata (per consentire il tracciamento, ndr)”. The goal of the Palermo Ladies Open organizers is to have a top ten on the board, while the dream is to play on the red clay courts of Viale dell'Olimpo, the former number 1 in the world, Maria Sharapova (currently n 136 of the WTA classification). Projects and programs of the 31st edition of the tournament, scheduled at the Country Club of Palermo from 18 to 26 July 2020, were made official at the press conference held this morning in Milan in the premises of Le Village by Crédit Agricole. The president of the club, Giorgio Cammarata, the tournament director, Oliviero Palma, and the General Communication Advisor, Angelo Sajeva, have projected themselves into the future, starting, however, from the 2019 budget. The former tennis player also took part in the press conference. , Laura Garrone (now Sky commentator) who recalled her many games at the Country. BALANCE. The advertising revenue, the television rights and the proceeds from the ticket office have allowed the Country Tiime Club of Palermo to close the Palermo Ladies Open edition of the event. "After 6 years of absence the response of the public was really satisfying - Cammarata pointed out - 15% of revenues came from the ticket office, while 24% from television rights and 51% from sponsors. PALERMO NOVEMBER 6, 2019 - The president of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, will take part tomorrow (Thursday 7 November) in Milan at the press conference for the presentation of the Palermo Ladies Open, the international women's tennis tournament on the WTA circuit scheduled from 18 to 26 July 2020 on the clay courts of the Country Time club In the Sicilian capital.
